Learning a New Tool

When you are trying out a new development tool, what do you look for to help you learn how to effectively use the tool? Is it help files, tutorials, white papers, samples, case studies, etc? Or do you learn best by participating in classes or through mentoring?

Perhaps you only try to learn tools that are easily assimilated, and if so, what makes one tool easier to learn than another?

Your thoughts are appreciated. ; )

Screencasts have been the best learning mechanism outside traditional means. Good api docs, copy and paste-able examples and a mailing list that somebody is always on top of.

Thanks for the input Brian ... those all sound like excellent ideas!

Hey Graham. I started to post a comment, but it grew long in a hurray so I decided to make a blog post out of it:
